Citrus Sugar Recipe
This citrus sugar recipe is so easy to make. Do you have lemons, limes, oranges or other citrus fruit in your frig? After you have eaten your fruit, do not throw that peel away. Make citrus sugar?
This sugar is great to add to drinks, especially tea. Also, use it in your baking instead of regular white sugar. It will give your cookies, cakes or even pancakes a little zip.
Do you need an inexpensive holiday gift?
Most people love homemade presents. Just put some citrus sugar in a decorative glass jar with a lid. Make sure the lid seals tight. Then add a ribbon and tag with a recipe or suggestion on how to use the sugar.
This present does not take much time to make. You can find decorative jars in most discount stores. Canning jars also work very well.
Recipe for Lemon Sugar

What you do:
First, using a citrus zester, remove all the zest from the lemons. Then chop the lemon zest. You want it to be coarse. Add one cup of the sugar and all the lemon zest to a food processor and pulse for a few minutes. The zest should be finely ground so it blends well with the sugar.
Now, add the remaining sugar and toss until it is well combined.
This is the important part, spread the lemon sugar on a large cookie sheet and let sit until dry. This will take approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
After it is dry, put the sugar in a sealed, airtight container and keep in the refrigerator. Now it is ready to use as needed.
This sugar can be stored for several months in the airtight container.
Recipe for Orange Sugar
The ingredients:
- 1 1/4 cup grated orange peel
- 1 cup sugar
What you do:
Grate the peel from the oranges until you have 1 1/4 cups. Use the method as above in the Lemon Sugar for the rest of the recipe.
Tip: With the oranges, make sure you have not included any juice or pith, which is the white tissue under the rind, with the grated peel.
Tip: When making any of the citrus sugar recipe, you do need to make and store it immediately after you grate the peel.
