Leftover Candy - How to Store It and Ideas to Use It

STORING YOUR CANDY

  • Candy, including chocolate candy, can be frozen. Make sure it is wrapped well and stored in an airtight container. This is important to keep ice from building up inside the container.

If you are freezing chocolate candy, it will sometimes lose its fresh look and develop what is called a sugar or fat “bloom”. This is because the sugar separates and rises to the surface of the candy. So it develops a white or gray swirls or spots. The taste of the chocolate should not affected even though it can look unpleasing to the eye.

  • You can also store your candy in bottles. Make sure the bottles are air tight. This is so the candy will stay fresh for a long time. Some think this may be better than freezing. This is especially true for chocolate candy, if you do not want to develop the “bloom”. Make sure, however, the bottle is sealed very tight. You want to keep air from getting into the bottle and spoiling your candy.

HOW TO USE LEFTOVER CANDY

Chocolate Candy:

Other Candy:
  • Use some of that frozen or stored candy for the decorations when making a gingerbread house for Christmas with your children or grandchildren. That can be hours of fun!
  • Sprinkle candies on top of a cake, cookies, cupcakes, brownies or ice cream.
  • You can give leftover candy away to other people who love candy. Also, you could take it to school, to church, take it to your workplace, the senior center or give it out to your friends and grandparents. The list can go on and on.

Most people love candy so you would be making them so happy! I love to see people’s faces light up when I share it with them.

  • Candy makes good decorations. One decoration I have made in the past is I took Styrofoam in the shape of a tree and glued candies on it. It made a great centerpiece during the Christmas holidays.
  • You can also make candy necklaces, bracelets, and rings for your kids and their friends.
  • Finally, use the candy in a piñata for any celebration.
