Homemade Ice Cream Recipes and Baked Cherries

Ready for some old fashion homemade ice cream recipes? Here are a couple of recipes from the past. The second recipe goes into more detail about using an old fashioned freezer. And check out the baked cherries recipe at the bottom. It is quick and easy to make.

Vanilla Ice Cream

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
Using Evaporated Milk

Ingredients:

  • 6 eggs, separated
  • 3 tall cans evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 6 drops lemon extract
  • 1 1/2 qt. whole milk
What to do:

Separate the egg whites from the egg yolks. Beat the egg whites until they are stiff. Mix the egg yolks with the evaporated milk, vanilla and lemon extract. Fold in the beaten egg whites. Add whole milk.

Pour the mixture into an old fashioned freezer and freeze.

Homemade Ice Cream
Using Heavy Cream

Ingredients:

  • 9 eggs
  • 2 tbsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 cups sugar
  • dash of salt
  • 2 to 3 quarts milk
What to do:

Beat the eggs, using an electric mixer. You want to beat the eggs until they are frothy. To that add the sugar, vanilla, salt and 1 quart milk. Continue to beat until well blended.

Pour into a 1 1/2 gallon old fashioned freezer. Gently stir in the cream and whatever amount of milk is necessary to fill the freezer to the right fullness for freezing, according to the freezer’s manufacturer.

Pack with crushed ice and rock salt and freeze.

Try the following Baked Cherries recipes to go with one of the above homemade ice cream recipes.

Baked Cherries

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp. tapioca
  • 2 cans pitted sour cherries, about 1 quart
  • 1 cup uncooked oatmeal
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 stick margarine
What to do:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

Mix together the tapioca and cherries and pour into a 1 1/2 quart baking dish and set aside while preparing the topping.

For the topping, mix the brown sugar, oatmeal and melted margarine together until there are no dry spots left. This will make a crumbly mixture.

Spread the mixture on top of the cherries and tapioca. Place in the oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes.

Tip: Substitute peaches or blueberries for the cherries. The fruit should be unsweetened.
