Mother's Homemade Fudge Recipe

This is the homemade fudge recipe that my mother made when I was a child. I can still remember stirring it until the shine went away and pouring it out onto the patter.

My Mother's Fudge

First, butter the plate where you will pour the fudge.

Then mix together:

  • 2 cups white sugar
  • pitch of salt
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
Then add:
  • 3/4 cup canned milk
Put on medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. When it is continuously boiling, turn to low heat and stop stirring. Cook on low for 8 to 10 minutes.

It is now time to check to see if the fudge is to the soft-ball stage or as my mother would say, put a small amount in cold water to see if the fudge starts to get hard. If is does, then it is time to set the pan of fudge in the sink in cold water, add 1 tsp. butter and beat until the shine goes away and the fudge gets thick.

Pour into the buttered plate.
