It is a sweet sauce made with eggs, milk, sugar and a thickening agent, or with milk and custard powder. A custard was originally an open pie made of pie meat or fruit. The name custard referred to the pie's crust or pastry shell. The filling included stock or milk. It was often thickened with eggs. Below is a recipe my mother made in the 1960s. Egg Custard - 3 eggs
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups milk
Use electric mixer and beat the eggs slightly. Mix in the sugar, the vanilla and then the milk. Pour into individual cups.Preheat oven at 350 degrees and heat some water to pour into an oblong pan. Put cups of custard into the pan with hot water. Sprinkle nutmeg on top of each individual serving. Bake for 25 minutes. Also, this recipe may be baked at 400 degrees in a crust for a pie.
